MENU: barrish

Welcome to the inside of the A.O. Movement Collective’s barrish.

In the fall of 2010, the AOMC began work on a new piece called barrish, pre-premiereing the work as part of the La MaMa Moves! festival in May 2011.  Soon after, the AOMC launched the the MENU project – an innovative model that re-envisions the dancemaking economy by democratizing the curatorial process and creating truly transmutable art.

Using barrish as the pilot piece, the MENU project invited everyday people to declare themselves curators and become radically intimate with the AOMC’s creative process as the work was developed.  Ten individuals and four presenters partnered with the AOMC in the MENU project’s first year to create nine unique curations of barrish for spaces ranging from rooftops to stairwells, living rooms to theaters, and galleries to bathrooms.

The World Premiere of barrish at HERE Arts Center in Manhattan July 12-14th 2012 was the first time all 27 sections of barrish cohered to form an evening-length whole: the AOMC’s envisioning of one possible “final product” before the work again disassembled  into its transmutable parts for touring and future curations.

barrish is open for curation –
not just to presenters, but to you as an individual.

We invite you to curate a performance at your home, apartment, or space – you can throw a party, tell no one, live stream it, use it to fundraise, or have it with dinner. We have something for all spaces, budgets, audiences, and occasions—take a look and see which sections strike you.  Each in-process showing could feature any number of sections, combined in any number of ways.

Additionally, curating a showing gets you much more than just a performance—by participating in a discussion about what’s interesting and important to you, you’ll become one of the piece’s major underwriters, receiving credit at all future performances of the work, and engaging with it in a radically intimate way. Check out our frequently asked questions, or get the discussion started by expressing your interestCheck out our showings page to see where learn more about our previous curations, and we’ll be performing barrish next!
